Demonstrating the World Window system

World Window is a portable interactive stereo visualization system developed by Dr. Andrew Warnock in collaboration with the College of Natural Sciences Dean’s office and CSMATE in Early 2008. The 3rd dimension is a critical element of imagination that is missing from the worksheets, textbooks, and computer screens that dominate classrooms today.

The World Window portable interactive 3-D theater allows groups of ~25 students at a time to visualize abstract concepts in a natural and realistic way. It is particularly well suited for studying nature at very large or very small scales and for visualizing reconstructions of the past. A series of 30 minute shows that can be used for education and outreach are in the works.

  • 3-D Expedition to Antarctica — March 24 – April 7, 2009, a CSU graduate student, Phoenix Mourning-Star traveled with 60 other students from around the world to explore antarctica with explorer Robert Swan, the first person to walk to both poles. Phoenix took a 3-D video camera rig I designed specificaly for this trip.
  • 3-D Expedition to Greenland — October 21-November 4, 2009, Bob Faris, a local master science teacher from Riffenburgh Elementary School took the second generation 3-D video rig to Thule Greenland where he documented the research he is doing in conjunction with scientists from the CSU Natural Resources Ecology Laboratory. His footage will complement the footage that Phoenix shot in Antarctica in our new show on ice.

Other 3-D Educational Technologies being Developed

Low-cost paper models are also being developed to complement the World Window show content. ChromaDepth glasses are being evaluated for their applicability in classroom and field settings.
